Applications of the CASiMiR Model
Minimum Flow Studies
In the assessment of water withdrawals from rivers, particularly when considering the impacts of hydropower plants, the determination of ecologically sound flow rates is necessary in order to guarantee the proper functioning of the riverine ecosystem. Habitat models can be helpful in the quantitative assesment of environmental impacts during periods of low flow. Problems can be identified and key flow rates during critical periods (eg hatching and spawning) can be assigned to ensure the ecological system remains intact. In particular, the interplay between morphologic characteristics and flow rate, namely the impact of structural upgrades to the habitats can be investigated.
